Nyako Applauds APRM Initiative

Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa state has described the introduction of the African Peer Review Mechanism APRM as one of the giant steps taken in ensuring true democratic enthronement in the continent, if properly applied by all tiers of government.

He made the assertion at an interactive session organised by the state’s group of the programme with participants drawn from the North-East zone and some African countries, at the banquet hall of Government House, Yola.
The Governor who was represented at the forum by his Deputy, Barrister James Ngilari, stressed the importance of the initiative saying it addresses and promotes various facet of democratic governance. According to him, the administration intends to adopt the Peer Review mechanism drive in all the 21 local government areas of the state.

Governor Nyako directed that committees be set up to oversee the workings of the Peer Review initiative.
Reiterating the governor's call, the ARRM representative and group leader, Professor Shadrack Gutto , said the mechanism will focus its attention towards good governance, general population balance, Elite and non-Elite decision making all geared towards the sustenance of democracy and good governance.

Speaking to Journalists after the session, the leader of the group, Professor Shadrack Gutto, said the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) process, which is an instrument for change of mind, values to create a society where everyone would have an opportunity to showcase their potentials.

Commenting on the African leadership syndrome of do or die political affair; he argued that as long as the institution of governments does not have control system, where leaders are restricted to their entitlement the corrupt tendency of grabbing resources for oneself will continue to be a problem.

He opined that leadership positions should only be given to those who will be willing to serve.
Participating countries at the interactive session in Yola include Ghana, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Liberia, Guinea and Uganda.
